Pricing questions

How to price a junk removal job

How should I price a junk removal job?

Start from your real costs: crew labor, truck time, dump fees, special-item fees like TVs and mattresses, and what it cost you to book the job. Add those up for your break-even, then price for the profit you want. Most owners quote by how much of the truck the load fills, but check heavy or slow jobs against crew time too. Our free lesson on pricing heavy items shows why.

How do I include dump fees in a quote?

Estimate the load's weight (cubic yards × your average pounds per yard), convert to tons, and multiply by your dump's rate. Your own scale tickets are the best source for your average weight per yard. Price the fee into every quote so it never comes out of your margin.

Should I charge extra for TVs, monitors and mattresses?

If your recycler or dump charges per item, yes. Put it on its own line so the customer sees why. In some states, TVs and computer equipment can't go in the landfill at all, so plan where they go before you take them.

What profit margin should a junk removal job have?

It depends on your market, crew and overhead. Set a target that covers your own pay and office costs on top of the job costs here, and never quote below your minimum charge. A local CPA can help you set the right number for your business.
